Will MySpace Last?
Since the rising popularity of MySpace, a number of criticisms have been made against the social networking site. Since the purchase of the site by Newscorp in 2005, some members have accused the company of censorship. While the revenues of the company are strictly kept secret, Rupert Murdoch purchased the company for approximately $580 million dollars, one of the largest purchases of a website that has been made in history. Since the acquisition of MySpace, the website has exploded in popularity.
A number of internet users have accused MySpace of being trendy. Newscorp has been found shutting down any blogs on the site which were critical of the company. While the London Independent ran a story about this incident in early 2006, it has been ignored by the mainstream media, and most MySpace users aren't even aware of the incident. A number of users have also accused the website of blocking links to sites that are not even a part of the social networking industry. Rupert Murdoch, one of the primary owners of MySpace, has said that the mainstream establishment has lost control of the communications technologies, and they must regain control of them.
It seems apparent that the purchase of MySpace is their first attempt at doing this. Because MySpace has nearly 100 million members, this means that millions of people will be on the site at any one time. The servers have begun to slow down because of the users, and if you try to access the site during peak usage, you may get a message which tells you that the server is too busy. In addition this, a number of institutions are blocking access to the site for public computers because of bandwidth considerations. The last issue of heavy criticism is security. Many people have said that the MySpace administration is not doing enough to protect the privacy of users, though much of this responsibility lies in the users themselves. Many teenagers have bypassed the security that MySpaces offers, and have made themselves potential victims of predators.
While MySpace is one of the most popular websites in the world, many people believe it is the beginning of an attack on free speech. However, it is likely that the popularity of MySpace will continue. It is an influential website, and has had a powerful influence over the way people communicate and express themselves on the internet. However, the rise in censorship can set up the precedent that could destroy MySpace, as well as other social networking sites.
